Free-for-All Erupts on California Highway after Armored Truck Spills Cash
Chaos erupted on a California highway over the weekend after an armored truck spilled thousands of $1 and $20 bills on Interstate 5.
The incident occurred Friday in Carlsbad, where the back door of an armored truck suddenly swung open “and bags of cash fell out,” says California Highway Patrol Sergeant Curtis Martin.
The bags broke open, leaving cash strewn all over the roadway — and bringing traffic to a dead stop as motorists left their vehicles and begin scooping up the money.
Although only two people were arrested at the scene, CHP officials issued a warning, telling residents anyone caught with the cash would face charges.
By Friday afternoon, more than a dozen people had returned the money they’d picked up, Martin says. It’s unclear how much money has not been returned.
