Grocery Workers In Palm Springs Getting A Pay Raise; City Passes Ordinance Forcing Employers To PayPeople who work in grocery stores in the city of Palm Springs will be making an extra 4 dollars per hour for every hour they work for 120 days. That’s because the Palm Springs City Council has approved an urgency ordinance mandating the stores pay that extra money. The City Council calls the extra pay, hero pay. Any store with at least 300 workers around the county and at least 15 workers at each location in the city of Palm Springs will have to comply. After passing similar ordinances, the city of Long Beach had 2 major grocery stores closed, and Los Angeles saw 3 major grocery stores close. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————- A group of farm owners has filed a lawsuit against the City of Coachella, after the city council recently approved ‘hero pay’ for retail store workers and farmworkers. And the City Council has also approved a plan to subsidize some of the expense of that hero pay, covering 750-thousand dollars, so farm owners won’t have to pay all of it. The Western Growers Association, California Fresh Fruit Association, and Growing Coachella Valley says the urgency ordinance passed by the city council in Coachella is vague and unconstitutional. Back on February 10th 2021, The Coachella City Council unanimously passed an urgency ordinance forcing grocery stores, retail stores, even drug stores, restaurants and farms to pay their employees an extra 4 dollars per hour for 120 days.
